Building a custom Shopify platform for productised tradie website subscriptions

Built For The Trade is a productised website subscription service created and operated by Spacey Studios, designed to help tradies, contractors, and small service businesses get a professional website without the complexity of a traditional custom web project.

The brand was developed to offer clear, fixed-price website packages with a streamlined setup process, practical design options, optional add-ons, and ongoing support — all structured around a subscription model.

While Built For The Trade is part of the Spacey Studios ecosystem, the website itself became a major project in its own right. It required far more than a standard ecommerce setup. The platform needed to sell website subscriptions, guide customers through theme selection and configuration, handle upfront payments, connect ongoing direct debit arrangements through GoCardless, and clearly communicate the model in a way that felt simple, trustworthy, and easy to understand.

Spacey Studios designed and developed the full Built For The Trade website on Shopify, creating a custom theme, product configurator, subscription workflow, and ecommerce experience tailored specifically to the business model.

The Challenge

Built For The Trade needed to sell a service like a product.

Unlike a typical Shopify store selling physical goods, Built For The Trade offers subscription-based website packages. Customers are not just buying an item and checking out. They are choosing a website theme, selecting billing preferences, adding optional extras, understanding a 12-month minimum term, completing an upfront payment, and then setting up ongoing direct debit payments for the remainder of the subscription.

The challenge was to make that process feel as clear and frictionless as possible.

The website needed to:

  • Explain a new productised website subscription model clearly
  • Position the offer as professional, affordable, and trustworthy
  • Allow customers to compare and select website themes
  • Support product configuration across billing frequency, region, and add-ons
  • Create a checkout experience that felt familiar while handling a more complex service model
  • Integrate Shopify with GoCardless for ongoing subscription payments
  • Communicate Direct Debit setup clearly after checkout
  • Support multiple markets, pricing structures, and currencies
  • Provide enough detail to build trust without overwhelming tradies and contractors
  • Maintain a polished brand experience across every page, product, and checkout touchpoint

There was also a strategic challenge. The website needed to feel simple to the customer, even though the system behind it was doing a lot.

The Approach

We approached the website as a custom ecommerce platform built around clarity, conversion, and operational flow.

From the beginning, the goal was to make Built For The Trade feel easy to understand. Tradies are busy, practical, and often comparing options quickly, so the website needed to explain the offer without unnecessary jargon or overcomplication.

We designed the experience around a clear customer journey: understand the offer, explore website themes, compare inclusions, choose a package, configure the subscription, complete checkout, and then set up ongoing payments securely through GoCardless.

Every page was written, designed, and structured to reduce hesitation. This included clear explanations of what is included, how the process works, what happens after checkout, how payments are handled, and what customers can expect during the website build.

The platform was built on Shopify using a custom theme developed specifically for the Built For The Trade model.

Custom Shopify Theme Design & Development

The Built For The Trade website was designed and developed as a fully custom Shopify theme.

Rather than adapting a generic ecommerce template, we built the theme around the specific needs of a productised website service. This allowed us to create custom page layouts, theme collection pages, product templates, add-on structures, and content sections that better explained the offer and supported conversion.

The design direction was intentionally clear, confident, and trade-focused. The website needed to feel polished and trustworthy without feeling too corporate or agency-heavy. It had to speak to tradies and contractors in a direct, practical way while still reflecting the quality and professionalism behind the service.

The custom theme also gave us flexibility to structure content around education and decision-making, not just product browsing. Sections such as “How It Works”, “What’s Included”, theme previews, FAQs, support information, and checkout guidance all play an important role in helping customers understand the model before committing.

Productised Website Themes

A key part of the platform is the website theme system.

Built For The Trade launched with a curated range of pre-designed website themes, each tailored for tradies, contractors, and service businesses. Customers can explore available themes, review the style and structure of each option, and choose the one that best suits their business.

The Shopify CMS structure was set up to support theme products with detailed descriptions, preview imagery, inclusions, feature lists, and purchasing pathways.

This gives customers the confidence of choosing from a defined design system, while allowing Built For The Trade to keep the production process streamlined and scalable behind the scenes.

The website also includes space for future theme releases, making the platform easier to grow as new design options are added.

Custom Product Configurator

One of the most important pieces of the website was the custom product configurator.

Built For The Trade’s checkout flow needed to account for more than a simple product selection. Customers select a website theme, choose their preferred payment frequency, review pricing for their region, consider optional add-ons, and understand how the upfront and ongoing payment model works.

The configurator was designed to make these options feel clear and manageable.

Rather than asking customers to interpret a complex pricing structure on their own, the product experience guides them through the key decisions. It presents subscription details, inclusions, and add-on options in a way that feels more like configuring a service package than buying a static product.

This was particularly important for reducing friction and building trust. The clearer the configuration experience, the easier it is for customers to understand exactly what they are purchasing and what happens next.

Subscription Flow & GoCardless Integration

The subscription model was one of the most complex parts of the project.

Built For The Trade uses Shopify to process the initial checkout payment, while GoCardless is used to manage ongoing Direct Debit subscription payments. This required a careful customer flow to ensure the experience felt connected, transparent, and secure.

The website needed to explain that customers complete the first payment through Shopify, then set up their ongoing Direct Debit mandate through GoCardless after checkout.

This structure required clear cart messaging, checkout-adjacent explanations, post-purchase instructions, onboarding emails, and supporting content to reduce confusion. Customers needed to understand the 12-month minimum term, the upfront payment, the ongoing billing arrangement, and the role GoCardless plays in collecting future payments.

Behind the scenes, the platform was designed to support this operational workflow while keeping the customer-facing experience as simple as possible.

Custom Shopify & GoCardless Order Sync

To support the ongoing subscription model more effectively, a custom integration was planned and developed to connect GoCardless payments back into Shopify.

The goal was to ensure recurring payments made through GoCardless could be reflected within the Shopify environment, helping maintain cleaner customer records, order history, and business visibility.

This required custom webhook logic, payment event handling, Shopify order creation workflows, and secure handling of customer and subscription data.

For Built For The Trade, this created a stronger operational foundation by bringing the subscription model closer to Shopify’s existing order and customer management structure, rather than leaving ongoing payments disconnected from the ecommerce platform.

Multi-Market Pricing & Regional Setup

Built For The Trade was designed with future expansion in mind.

Although the primary market is Australia, the platform also needed to support regional growth into New Zealand and other international markets. This required careful consideration around Shopify Markets, currencies, pricing, domain structure, and consistency between Shopify checkout and ongoing GoCardless payment arrangements.

Pricing needed to remain clear and predictable across regions, avoiding confusing currency mismatches or unexpected conversions for customers.

The website structure was built to support this broader market setup, giving Built For The Trade a stronger foundation for national and international growth over time.

Content, Messaging & Trust Building

Because the business model is different from a traditional website design service, content played a major role in the website experience.

The copy needed to be direct, helpful, and reassuring. It had to explain what customers get, what they do not get, how the subscription works, what the support plan includes, and what happens at each stage of the process.

We developed clear website content across product pages, FAQs, support pages, checkout messaging, and onboarding touchpoints to help remove uncertainty.

This was especially important around the licensing model, Direct Debit setup, 12-month minimum term, revision rounds, support inclusions, add-ons, and post-checkout workflow.

The aim was to make the experience feel transparent from the start — giving customers enough information to feel confident without burying them in complexity.

The Outcome

The final Built For The Trade website is a custom Shopify platform designed around a highly specific subscription-based service model.

It gives the brand a polished and scalable digital presence, while supporting a customer journey that moves from theme selection and configuration through to checkout and ongoing payment setup.

The site combines clear messaging, custom ecommerce functionality, subscription logic, GoCardless payment workflows, regional market planning, and a scalable theme system into a single platform.

For Built For The Trade, the result is more than a marketing website. It is the core infrastructure of the business — the place where customers learn about the offer, choose their website, configure their subscription, and begin their onboarding journey.

For Spacey Studios, it also represents a strong example of building something from the ground up: brand, website, product model, ecommerce structure, subscription workflow, and customer experience all working together.

Reflection

Built For The Trade was a unique project because it was not just a client website — it was a business we were building for ourselves.

That made the project both exciting and challenging. We were not only designing how the brand should look, but also shaping how the entire service model should work online. Every decision had a direct impact on customer understanding, business operations, fulfilment, payment collection, and future scalability.

What made the website particularly interesting was the need to make a complex system feel simple. Behind the scenes, the platform brings together Shopify, product configuration, regional pricing, subscription logic, GoCardless Direct Debit workflows, custom integration planning, and a highly structured customer onboarding process. But for the customer, the experience needed to feel clear, practical, and easy to follow.

We were especially proud of the product configurator and subscription flow. Selling a service through Shopify requires a different way of thinking, especially when that service involves an upfront payment, ongoing billing, a minimum term, optional add-ons, and post-checkout setup. The final experience helped bring all of that together in a way that feels much more approachable.

This project also reinforced the power of building a platform around a clear niche. By focusing specifically on tradies and contractors, every part of the site could be more intentional — from the language and design style through to the themes, pricing, FAQs, and support model.

For us, Built For The Trade represents the kind of digital product we love creating: strategic, practical, technically considered, and designed to make a complex offer feel simple. It is a strong example of how brand, ecommerce, automation, and user experience can come together to create a platform that supports both customers and the business behind it.
